Loyalty isn't Everything

Description

Inspired by my desires to see "Wreck-It Ralph" in theaters. After renewing my DA membership, I now know for sure that it will not happen. [link]

It was a warm November night, and Billy decided to go for a walk. He passed by Sonic's house on the way back and remembered something that made him unhappy. He knocked on Sonic's door. Sonic answered and let him in.

"Hey, Billy. What's going on?"

"There's something I wanted to talk to you about."

"What?"

"I'm sure you heard about 'Wreck-It Ralph,' have you not?"

"Yeah! In fact, I got my own special, private seat when I went to see it."

"I'm glad to hear that," said Billy with a smile.

"Did you see it yet?"

Billy's smile quickly faded. "That's why I wanted to talk to you," he sighed. "I haven't and won't be able to."

"Why not?"

"Tammy's working on a movie herself, and I'm needed. All the showtimes are sold out and by the time I get the chance to see it in theaters, they won't be showing it any longer."

"Why do you want to see it in theaters so badly?"

"It's the first time you're on the big-screen, and besides, everyone else who wanted to see it has seen it. When they tell me that I should see it, I tell them I will only to have this empty space inside of me. I don't want to be the only one who hasn't seen it, especially since you're in it. That's how loyal I am to you."

Sonic put his hand on Billy's and smiled. "If loyalty to me is the reason you want to see it, you're approaching loyalty from the wrong angle. If you're loyal to me, think about what I would like for you. I don't want you to worry about it. It would mean even more to me if you worked with Tammy on her own movie. Besides, it'll be on Blu-Ray and DVD, and you'll see it eventually."

"It's not the same," Billy said sadly. "It's a big screen."

"No, it isn't, but even your home TV can be 'bigger' than a theater screen. You'll be closer to it and even watch it in the dark. Best of all, you'll can watch it whenever you like, you won't have to pay to see it again, and you can watch it with everyone close to you. No strangers or bathroom breaks to worry about either."

"I guess so."

"Listen, I understand how badly you want to see it. I know it'll take a while for you to process it in your mind correctly, but I'll try and make it up to you. When you buy it, I'll bring Amy over and you, me, and the girls can watch it together. I won't spoil anything for you either."

"Well that's a kind offer, Sonic. Thank you," said Billy quietly.

"And if there's anything you'd like to talk about with me and I'm not busy or anything, you can come to my house anytime you'd like. I'm glad you came over tonight to do so."

Billy shook his head in approval. "And you know what?" Sonic said to him. "You seem quite useful with that gun of yours. Tails, Knuckles, and I could use you."

"Really? Thank you!" said Billy, but then he felt a bit worried. "I don't want to get in the way or fall behind and upset you guys. I'm just a little guy, you're faster than me, and if Tails and Knuckles have trouble catching up with you, I'll have twice as much trouble trying to do the same."

"Hey, come on. You'll be fine," Sonic assured him. "Listen, I've learned some patience myself. You'll get the hang of it before you even know it. Besides, you have one heck of a strategic mind, and you're good at puzzles, right?"

"Thanks. At the same time, this isn't the video game series that you're in. This is the real deal."

"It won't be as extreme as you think. If you can play my games well, even if they're just the easier levels, this won't be a problem. I guarantee you."

"Thank you. You made me feel much better about this."

"Hey, bro. No problem. Anything you need to talk to me about, let me know. If I'm busy, drop a note, shoot an e-mail, anything. I'll get back to you."

"Thanks. By the way, do you mind if I call Tammy? Let her know where I'm at?"

"Sure. Go ahead."

After Billy's call, he thanked Sonic once more for his time and went back home, feeling better about things.
