Homemade Wheel of Fortune

Description

Ten years ago this month, I made this drawing which eventually led me to realize that I could make Wheel of Fortune illustrations. Intended to be a spinner used for Spanish class, I used math to make this spinner possible. After cutting one sheet of paper into a circle, I decided to divide each wedge by 15 degrees, since I knew 15 was a factor of 360. After dividing each wedge using a protractor, I noticed that there were 24 wedges, the same number of wedges used on the show's Wheel. Amazed by this coincidence, using a calculator to double check the math, I divided 360 by 15 and got 24. I soon colored the wedges in and added values.

When I was younger, I made Wheel of Fortune pictures using MS Paint (known as Paintbrush on Windows 3.1, the operating system I was using at the time; I still have that computer and it still runs on 3.1), but within months of making this September 2006 drawing, I made my first proper digital Wheel of Fortune illustration.

For almost a decade, my style of making these illustrations has been improving dramatically despite the fact that I never used Adobe Photoshop to make them.
I normally use MS Paint to color in the wedges although for a while in early 2008, I used Arcsoft PhotoImpression 5 for this purpose.
In the fall of 2007, I started using Microsoft Publisher to put in the numbers. Prior to then, I was using Microsoft Picture It Publishing 2001.
In the late summer of 2010, I starting using glittery effects and gradient effects for special wedges after discovering the "Set Transparent Color" tool in PowerPoint earlier that year.
In early 2013, I adopted a lineless style. I also started saving my work as PNG instead of JPG (to enhance the look despite using up more memory) at the same time.
